Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes 🥩🥔

Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 25 mins | Total Time: 40 mins
Servings: 4-6

Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs (900g) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & cubed
  • 4 tbsp (60g) butter
  • ½ cup (120ml) warm milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Beef & Gravy:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups (360ml) beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for depth)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

(Optional: ½ cup sliced mushrooms or a splash of red wine for extra flavor!)

Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (~15 mins). Drain well.
  2. Mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Cover and keep warm.

2. Cook the Beef & Gravy:

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it into crumbles. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add onion and garlic; cook 2-3 mins until softened.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the beef and stir for 1 min to cook off the raw taste.
  4. Slowly pour in beef broth, Worcestershire, soy sauce, thyme, and pepper. Stir well.
  5. Simmer 5-7 mins, stirring occasionally, until gravy thickens. Taste and adjust salt.

3. Serve:

  • Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and top with the beef gravy.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley.

Tips for the Best Dish

✔ Extra-rich gravy? Add a splash of heavy cream at the end.
✔ No lumps: Whisk the flour into the beef thoroughly before adding liquid.
✔ Make it veggie-packed: Stir in peas, carrots, or mushrooms.

Serving Ideas

  • 🥖 Pair with crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
  • 🥗 Add a simple green salad for balance.
  • 🧀 Sprinkle with cheddar cheese for a cheesy twist.

This dish is pure comfort food—warm, savory, and satisfying! Let me know if you’d like a slow-cooker or gluten-free version. 😊

(Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently with a splash of broth!)
