Potatoes and All the Neighbors Are Jealous!

Crispy, cheesy, meaty layers of comfort—this dish is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!


Ingredients:

  • 1 kg (2.2 lbs) potatoes, thinly sliced (use a mandoline for even thickness)

  • 400g (14 oz) mozzarella, grated (or sub with cheddar/Gouda for extra flavor)

  • 500g (1.1 lbs) ground meat (beef, pork, or chicken)

  • 1 onion, finely diced

  • Salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • 1 tsp paprika or garlic powder (optional)

  • Vegetable oil (for frying and greasing)

Optional Add-Ins:

  • 1 bell pepper, diced

  • 200g mushrooms, sliced

  • Fresh herbs (parsley, dill) for garnish


Instructions:

1. Prep the Potatoes:

  • Thinly slice potatoes (no need to peel). Soak in cold water for 10 mins to remove excess starch, then pat dry.

  • Heat oil in a pan and lightly fry potato slices in batches until slightly golden (not crispy). Set aside on paper towels.

2. Cook the Filling:

  • In the same pan, sauté onions until soft. Add ground meat, breaking it up. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook until browned. Drain excess fat.

3. Layer & Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.

  • Layer 1: Half the potatoes (slightly overlapping).

  • Layer 2: All the meat mixture.

  • Layer 3: Remaining potatoes.

  • Top generously with grated mozzarella.

4. Bake:

  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 mins. Uncover and bake 10-15 mins more until cheese is bubbly and golden.

5. Serve:

  • Let rest 5 mins, then garnish with herbs. Cut into squares and serve hot!


Tips for Success:

🔥 Extra Crispy Top: Broil for 2-3 mins at the end.
🍅 Saucy Twist: Spread a layer of tomato sauce under the meat.
🥗 Pair With: A fresh cucumber salad or pickles to cut the richness.
