Malva Pudding Donut Holes with Custard Dipping Sauce

Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 15 mins | Total Time: 30 mins
Makes: ~20 donut holes

Ingredients:

For Donut Holes:

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp (5g) baking soda

  • ½ cup (100g) sugar (white or brown for deeper flavor)

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tbsp (30g) apricot jam (or substitute with peach/mango jam)

  • 1 tbsp (15g) melted butter (plus extra for brushing)

  • 1 tsp (5ml) vinegar (white or apple cider)

  • ½ cup (120ml) milk

For the Malva Glaze (Optional but Recommended):

  • ¼ cup (50g) sugar

  • ¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream

  • 2 tbsp (30g) butter

  • 1 tbsp (15ml) hot water

  • 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract

For Custard Dipping Sauce:

  • 1 cup (240ml) milk

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 2 tbsp (25g) sugar

  • 1 tbsp (8g) cornstarch

  • 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Make the Donut Holes:

  1. Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a mini muffin tin or use a silicone mold.

  2. Mix dry ingredients: Whisk flour and baking soda in a bowl.

  3. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat egg and sugar until pale. Add jam, melted butter, vinegar, and milk. Mix well.

  4. Combine: Gently fold wet ingredients into dry until just combined (don’t overmix).

  5. Bake: Spoon batter into molds (¾ full). Bake 12-15 mins until golden and springy.

2. Malva Glaze (Optional):

While donuts bake, heat sugar, cream, butter, water, and vanilla in a saucepan until melted. Brush generously over warm donut holes for a sticky-sweet finish.

3. Custard Dipping Sauce:

  1. Heat milk in a saucepan until steaming (not boiling).

  2. Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch in a bowl.

  3. Slowly pour hot milk into egg mix, whisking constantly.

  4. Return to low heat and stir until thickened (3-4 mins). Remove, add vanilla, and cool.

Serving:

  • Serve donut holes warm with custard sauce for dipping.

  • Dust with powdered sugar or cinnamon for extra flair.

Tips:

🔥 Stickier Donuts? Double the glaze and soak them while hot.
🍮 Custard Shortcut: Use instant custard powder if pressed for time.
🍯 Jam Swap: Replace apricot with orange marmalade for a citrusy twist.

These are irresistibly soft with a caramelized crust—perfect for tea time or dessert! Want a baked version instead of fried? (These are oven-baked for ease!) 😊
