Posted on April 11, 2025

Here’s a comforting and hearty recipe for Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes—a classic homestyle dish that’s easy to make and packed with flavor!

Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes

Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 25 mins | Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients:

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs (about 4 medium) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Ground Beef & Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works best)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for depth)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (or 1 tsp fresh)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15 mins). Drain well.
  2. Mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Cover and keep warm.

2. Cook the Ground Beef & Gravy:

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat, breaking it into crumbles. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add onion and garlic; cook 2-3 mins until softened.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the beef and stir for 1 min to cook off the raw flour taste.
  4. Slowly pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), thyme, and pepper. Stir well.
  5. Simmer for 5-7 mins, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens. Taste and adjust salt as needed.

3. Serve:

  • Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates and top with the beef gravy.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley.

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Sautéed mushrooms for extra umami.
  • A splash of heavy cream in the gravy for richness.
  • A pinch of red pepper flakes for heat.

This dish is pure comfort food—perfect for weeknight dinners! Let me know if you’d like any tweaks. 😊🍴
